(continued from Earth Day)
I will be job hunting, hopefully for another green job, though those opportunities are dwindling no matter what you read in the press. People love to say they are green, but the green movement has been hit hard by the recession. People complain that everything green is more expensive. Well, most new things are until they become profitable to the point they can reduce their price. People complained about the cost of iPhone for a few weeks... until everybody bought one anyways... and then Apple cut the cost by 40%. They went from new product to commodity in under 18 months... and you know why? Because people bought what they believed in, even if in the end all they got was fun toy that can't actually make a phone call.
If we all treated the sustainable choices like we treat technology, we could really make some changes. If everybody would passionately purchase sustainably manufactured building materials the way they purchase a giant version of the iPhone, that doesn't make phone calls, green building materials would not come at a premium. And unlike first generation technology, first generation green products actually work.
If you want to be truly green then vote with your dollar and not only with your words. The green movement will sadly be a trend if people can't find the intangible value in buying goods that are beneficial to the ground they call home.
Cheers,
