One and a half Pinoy is a gripping fiction based on two very real life kids who know what it means to reach for the stars. In the novel a ten year old boy from the Philippines is brought to America in pursuit of a better life. The single mom works very hard just to get the money to set up her new life for her and her son. Upon arriving in America they end up being neighbors of a single dad and his teen daughter whose deceased mother was Filipina. There is almost instant chemistry between the boy and the teen girl, and between mom and dad.
The boy has a truly magic voice and the girl is successfully pursuing an acting career but she is totally enthralled with the young boys singing and so she sets about finding a way to get his voice out to an appreciative public. Real life behind the scenes machinations are revealed and in the story the boy becomes a huge hit. Everything looks great until……………….
A very nasty neighbor, a true and deep bigot very much like the Robert De Niro character in Machete sets his sights on the boy and his mom. He actually does get Immigration and Customs Enforcement to serve the family with notice of a deportation hearing and even uses the kid’s fame against him as he alerts the media to the immigration issue. From the bottom to the top they plunge towards a very ugly end but they are saved just before their deportation.
In the end the evil nemesis is vanquished, the boy hangs on to his rising star and the two adults fall in love. It is a warm and cheerful trip that really holds the reader with challenge upon challenge being met with wit and humor.
