'Once' wins Best Musical Theater Album Grammy

In an afternoon pre-broadcast show, the 2012 Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album was awarded to the cast album from the Tony winning Broadway hit show "Once The Musical." The album features Steve Kazee and Cristin Milioti as principal soloists. Steven Epstein & Martin Lowe were the producers and Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova, composers/lyricists. This album cites the Original Broadway Cast With Steve Kazee, Cristin Milioti and Others as the performers. It is on the Masterwork label.

"Once" was adapted from a film of the same name. It began in New York City in an Off-Broadway theatre where it quickly sold out its entire run. Since its arrival on Broadway last March, 2012, it has won the Tony Award for Best Musical and the lead actor, Steve Kazee received the Tony for Best Actor in a Musical. The musical is based in an Irish setting in Dublin and makes great use of the the more colorful, folk style associated with that city.

Other nominees in this category included cast albums from “Follies” in the revival show, The Gershwins' “Porgy And Bess” which was also a revival show, Disney's “Newsies,” and
“Nice Work If You Can Get It” which features songs by George and Ira Gershwin.
