In “Bad Blood,” episode 7 of “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland,” both Jafar and Alice come face to face with their fathers and the results their relationships have had on their lives. The episode aired Thursday, Dec. 5 and it was a bad day to be a dad in Wonderland.
As Jafar’s mom lay dying in Agrabah past, she produced a ring and told the boy his father was the Sultan and that he would be cared for if he showed him the ring. The boy goes to the palace and seeks out his dad but is met with less than a warm welcome. He is instead made a family servant and forbidden to ever call the Sultan “father.”
Jafar proves his higher intelligence when he foolishly shows up the Sultan’s legitimate son during a political meeting. For this, the young prince punishes Jafar with repeated slaps to the face. When he is alone with the Sultan, he apologizes for his mistake. The Sultan attempts to drown him and leaves him for dead, ordering a servant to dispose of the body with the rest of the trash. Later, the boy awakes, finds himself in the trash heap. The hatred and need for absolute power is born in Jafar.
Meanwhile, in the present day, adult Jafar visits Alice’s father and convinces him to travel to see Alice on the pretext of helping her. He brings him to Wonderland hoping to use him to bait Alice in to using a wish but realizes the two do not have a close relationship. Instead, Jafar uses some of Alice’s father’s blood to make potions that makes him look like Alice. He finds her and pretends to be her dad.
Alice and the Knave have found Jafar’s palace in the clouds and are constructing a raft made from the wood of a birdbark a tree because the wood can float on air. Alice finds her father and though he tries to apologize, she is reluctant to accept it. Edwin/Jafar coaxes out of the Knave that nothing means more to Alice than Cyrus and he gives him advice on how to patch things up with her.
While there, they are attacked by a fire breathing dragon, which Alice is forced to slay in order to save her father. In almost losing him, Alice realizes she still loves her father and forgives him. She invites him to join her quest to save Cyrus.
The real Edwin is locked up in Jafar’s palace next to the other prisoner. The older man tells Edwin there is only one thing Jafar wants and it is something he will never get.
Eventually Alice realizes that Edwin is not her father. When Jafar learns Alice is on to him, he transforms back into himself and returns to the castle to retrieve Edwin. Arriving on the magic carpet, Alice doesn’t believe the man with Jafar is her father. Edwin speaks of his love for her, his regret over not believing her and lets her know that Cyrus has escaped. Jafar pushes Edwin off the carpet, forcing Alice to expend her second wish. She wishes him to be back home. Edwin finds himself on the sofa and thinks his experiences in Wonderland were nothing more than a dream.
In Agrabah past we see the young adult Jafar storm into the palace to confront his father again. He is now recognizable as the older man Jafar holds prisoner. He demands to be recognized as his son but the Sultan refuses. Jafar kills the Sultan’s son, the prince and demands to be called ‘son.’ Otherwise the Sultan will endure a lifetime of pain but the Sultan still refuses to give in.
Knowing this is the one thing Jafar truly wants, he chides Jafar into letting him out of the cage so they can have a face to face confrontation. In an effort to forever deny him of his longing, the Sultan steps off the platform and falls into the abyss. Using the magic carpet to rescue him, he orders him back to the cage saying the real fun is about to begin.
Meanwhile, Cyrus wakes up outside the castle.
“Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” will return Thursday, Dec. 12 with the midseason finale, “Home.” Until then, check back often for news, spoilers and updates.
