ABC has released an extended synopsis for Season 4 of “Once Upon a Time'. The synopsis, shared by Spoiler TV on Aug. 14 gives us some direction for where the series will take us when it returns in a few weeks. Let’s look at the Season 4 synopsis and then break it down.
“The Storybrooke residents do not know what Elsa has in store for them. Back in the past, in Elsa's kingdom of Arendelle, we will discover what happened to her, her sister Anna and Kristoff, and how and why Elsa became a prisoner of Rumplestiltskin. And now that Emma has brought back Robin Hood's wife, Marian, and possibly sparked the end of Regina's relationship with him, will she return to her old, evil ways and do everything in her power to get even? And newlyweds Belle and Rumplestiltskin continue to be deeply in love with each other. But Rumple is hiding a secret from Belle -- one that, if found out, could destroy their happiness - he continues to be the master of the dagger that calls upon him to be the Dark One. Can Emma and Hook commit to one another, and can these two damaged people take their love to the next level? Mary Margaret and David have a new baby, Prince Neal, and are looking forward to raising him into a proud, brave and loving adult. But they are still sad that they were not able to do this with Emma, instead helping her escape the curse when she was first born and not meeting her again until she was 28 years old. Henry is very happy to have both of his mothers back in Storybrooke. But with biological mom Emma and paternal grandfather Rumplestiltskin's blood running through his veins, he will be tested by both the light and the darkness. Finally, Will Scarlet (Michael Socha, "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland"), a former member of Robin Hood's band of Merry Men, has traveled across many lands to make his way to Storybrooke. He finds himself intertwined in the goings-on in town for the first time as his mysterious past pushes him to an unknown future. As the season continues, new fairy tale characters will be revealed and old acquaintances will be revisited. But not everyone can be trusted.”
The “Frozen” story arc will dominate the first half of the season but there is plenty of action for the established characters too. For example, if you recall, Belle and Rumplestiltskin got married at the end of Season 3. As the synopsis implies, Rumple is hiding the secret of the dagger from Belle. If she finds out he lied to her and used this betrayal to convince her he was a changed enough man to get married, she will be devastated…and angry. Their relationship could be over before it begins.
The Charming clan has a couple of new additions to contend with. Snow White and Prince Charming get to parents to the newborn Prince Neal. It will be their first time actually raising a child and the experience could be entertaining to watch. Meanwhile, Emma has agreed to a relationship with Captain Hook. To say these two are damaged is putting it mildly. How they get past the baggage will also be fun to watch.
One of the most intriguing parts of the synopsis has to do with Henry. Being descended from Snow White and Emma who are inherently good and Mr. Gold/Rumple who is the personification of evil could lead to some challenging situations. What the showrunners have in mind is anybody’s guess. As Henry approached the angst-y teenage years, there is no telling how he will handle his heredity.
We have long known that Michael Socha from the now cancelled “Once Upon a Time in Wonderland” would be joining the cast and bringing his Will Scarlet character with him. How will he figure into the storyline. It will no doubt tie in with Robin Hood, Maid Marian and the Regina love triangle.
As for that last line about not trusting fairy tale characters, we are perplexed. Are they suggesting that some of our favorite heroes could embrace the dark side? We’ll have to wait until Sunday Sept. 28 when Season 4 of “Once Upon A Time” premieres on ABC.
