"True Blood" star Kristin Bauer van Straten is returning to ABC's "Once Upon a Time" to reprise her role as Maleficent during the second half of Season 4, EW.com first reported Tuesday (Aug. 26). The actress will appear in multiple episodes as a recurring guest star for a major arc in the upcoming fourth season.
Maleficent's last appearance was in the Season 1 finale after she was locked away in a cave under the clock tower, stuck in dragon form and was slain by Emma (Jennifer Morrison). The villainous character, based on the Wicked Fairy from "Sleeping Beauty," was also briefly seen in zombie form towards the end of the second season and later in the spinoff "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland," which was cancelled after one season due to low ratings.
Maleficent may be "Once Upon a Time's" main villain after the highly-anticipated "Frozen" storyline wraps. As Digital Spy reports, several characters from the hit animated film will be a part of Season 4, including Elsa (Georgina Haig), Anna (Elizabeth Lail), Kristoff (Scott Michael Foster) and Prince Hans (Tyler Jacob Moore). Elizabeth Mitchell ("Lost") was also recently added to the cast in a villainous role related to "Frozen," but the exact details have not yet been disclosed.
Van Straten recently wrapped seven seasons on HBO's "True Blood" as vampiress Pam. The show aired its series finale over the weekend. Her other TV credits include "The Secret Life of the American Teenager," "Justified" and "Private Practice."
"Once Upon a Time" returns for Season 4 on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 8/7 p.m. CT on ABC.
