On May 11 Wetpaint Entertainment posted the news that characters from the Disney movie "Frozen" will be appearing on "Once Upon a Time," the ABC fairytale drama that features fantasy characters in modern times. The series has been introducing popular characters and villains from different stories including Ursula, Rapunzel, and Peter Pan. The season three finale teased a new character for season four, and it seems that character could be Elsa.
The story of the box office smash hit "Frozen" was inspired by the fairytale "The Snow Queen," written by Hans Christian Andersen. The story follows two sisters named Anna and Elsa who are the daughters of the King and Queen, although Elsa has the power to create and manipulate ice and snow. When Elsa becomes Queen of Arendelle, the citizens turn against her once they discover her power, but she overcomes the fear to save the city.
Series creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have publicly mentioned that they are fans of the newest Disney animated adventure, and would love to incorporate the characters into future episodes. The film was released in November and production on season four won't start until late summer, but the tease in the season three finale reveals that "Frozen" will be coming in season four. The film is the highest grossing animated film of all time and has won multiple awards, so the series could be capitalizing on the popular of the film.
On May 12 Time confirmed the new connection by posting an official image from the show's Twitter page, that shows the back of a woman dressed like Elsa surrounded by ice. The image has a hashtag that says #Frozeniscoming and has been viewed thousands of times since it was posted late Sunday night. The series could be setting up Elsa as the new villain in season four, which would reimagine the character as being more evil which is more true to the original story.
"The Snow Queen" story was first published in December 1844 as a way to show the fight between good and evil to children. The character of the Snow Queen has the ability to travel through snow and ice and controls snow bees to carry out tasks. Two children, Kai and Gerda, get into trouble with a troll and the queen abducts Kai and Gerda goes to her castle to save her brother. The power of true love saves the children and breaks the Snow Queen's spell.
In the season three finale, a storage blue substance broke out of a bottle and a young woman wearing a blue dress formed from it. Then the camera showed her hands which cast magic at the floor which then turned to ice. As the woman started walking, everything in her path turned it ice much like Elsa. The woman's face is never shown, but that's a popular trick done by the series to tease a character before actually casting her. More characters from the film can be introduced in later episodes.
