‘Once Upon A Time’ scoop: Expect to see ‘cool’ new characters & more in Season 4

See who joins Elsa on 'Once Upon A Time'
See who joins Elsa on 'Once Upon A Time'

The chilling conclusion to ‘Once Upon A Time’s’ epic two-hour finale revealed Elsa as Season 4’s new presumable baddie (she must frightening for Rumple to have locked her away, right?!). Now, TVLine exclusively reveals more ‘Frozen’ characters who will be joining the cast in recurring roles next season.

Matt Mitovich reports:

TVLine has learned that casting is now underway for the aforementioned conflicted ice queen — who was glimpsed (and played by a stand-in) at the close of Season 3 — as well as her sister Anna and ice merchant Kristoff. Elsa will appear in approximately nine episodes, the others a bit less. (Hey, maybe Kristoff runs Henry’s favorite ice cream shoppe?)

And before you ask: As previously reported by TVLine, the show bosses laughed and offered a “No comment” on the prospect of a CGI Olaf showing up. …

ELSA | The Queen of Arendelle, this late-20s/early-30s beauty long struggled to control her “chilling” powers and even unleashed upon her town an eternal winter during her coronation. Ultimately, she realized that the key to controlling her powers is love — namely, her bond with sister Anna — and now she is aware of the threat she poses if she were to lose control of her magic again (in which instance Vancouver weather could rival Winnipeg’s!)

ANNA | Elsa’s slightly younger sister is a fun-loving, fearless optimist who often gets herself into situations where she is in over her head, yet is able to triumph due to her resourcefulness and can-do spirit. She values her relationship with her sister above all else.

KRISTOFF | This handsome, hearty, salt-of-the-earth ice cutter spent most of his life alone (unless you count his reindeer). He has a sometimes-gruff demeanor that can hide his deep love for Anna and her sister Elsa. When we first meet Kristoff on Once, he is adjusting to life at the castle — including sleeping indoors for the first time in his life.

It looks like ‘OUAT’ will pick-up from where Disney’s animated blockbuster left off, while also throwing in new challenges for the frosty royal family. We know Elsa made the time-traveling trip into Storybrooke, but we’re not sure if Zelena’s curse brought Anna and Kristoff over with the others. So it will be interesting to see how we’ll meet these fun new characters.

‘Frozen’s’ theme of familial True Love ties in very well with ‘Once’s’ mythology. Will Anna be called upon to save Elsa again? Or will it take a different kind of True Love this time around? Perhaps someone in Storybrooke will warm up to the ice queen and keep her cool powers in check. Only time will tell.

In the meantime, let’s have some fun playing casting director! Who would you like to see cast in these roles?

In other ‘Once Upon A Time’ news, many fans have been worrying about some of our favorite couples. Captain Swan finally found a good groove, but Outlaw Queen and RumBelle may be in serious jeopardy.

Robin Hood and Regina had such a hard time getting over their first loves. Now that Marian has returned, how can Robin resist being with the woman he has loved for so long? Throughout the season we were told that Regina and Robin were destined for True Love. Oncers can’t help but wonder if Outlaw Queen was designed to be another sneaky twist? TVLine has the scoop:

After all the build-up of Once Upon a Time‘s Regina and Robin being soul mates, please tell me that we aren’t all the sudden going to find out that the lion tattoo is really common and Robin really wasn’t the man in the pub. –Megan

I’ve seen that “theory” floating around, yeah, but Once cocreator Adam Horowitz shot an arrow right through it when I ran it by him. “No, no, no…. That [flashback scene] was not a misdirect,” he reassures. “The man Regina saw in the tavern with the tattoo was Robin Hood.”

So Robin Hood is still Regina’s True Love. But what happens now that Robin has two True Loves? Is it possible for Robin to share True Love with Marian and Regina all at once? Will he feel torn between the two or just be happy to have his beloved Marian back? Has Tinker Bell’s True Love prophecy changed with Marian’s return? Could Regina be destined to find a new True Love in her altered future?

As for RumBelle, our sweet librarian thinks she has married a reformed man, but we know better. Rumple tried to change, he really did, but he just couldn’t resist avenging Neal’s death. In addition to the act of murder itself, Rumple has been majorly lying to Belle. It is heartbreaking to watch and I’m already fearing the moment when Belle discovers the truth about the Dark One’s dagger. She is going to be crushed. At least we’ll see them share some good times before things get crazy again. TVLine teases:

Question: Will we get to see Once Upon a Time’s “Rumbelle” as a married couple, seeing them in their home instead of the shop all the time? Will they have a honeymoon, eventually? Will we see some happy times? –Intarr

Ausiello: Funny you should bust out the H-word. Because in previewing Season 4 — where Rumple will continue to conceal the secret about the true dagger, as well as revisit whatever complicated history he has with that ice queen, Elsa — series co-creator Adam Horowitz said, “There is a list of things that are brewing for Belle and Rumple to deal with, but before they do, let’s let them enjoy their honeymoon.” (Surely he was speaking figuratively, so calm down, everyone.)

What kind of history do you think Rumple shared with Elsa? Did she back out on a deal? Could they have been romantically involved? Will something about their shared history threaten Rumple’s relationship with Belle?

Every enjoyable scooplet raises a series of new questions, proving once again that this is going to be a long summer. At least we’ll have some more ‘Once Upon A Time’ goodies to look forward to before the Season 4 premiere.
