“Once Upon a Time” is still a few weeks away from airing Season 4 but we have some tidbits of information for you. We all know the first half of the season is going to lead off with a storyline based on the “Frozen” characters. According to an Aug. 18 post on Comic Book Resources, the producers have nailed down a timeframe for the story.
Executive producer Adam Horowitz explained that while “Once Upon a Time” takes place in something lie modern time, the Storybrooke portion of the series has moved into the early part of 2013. None of its residents will be familiar with the characters from “Frozen” because the movie didn’t premiere until Nov. 27 of 2013.
Fans have been wondering if the reason Rumplestiltskin was keeping Elsa locked up or the reason she followed Emma, Hook and Marian to Storybrooke had to do with another familial tie. Horowitz assures us there are no such rabbits up his sleeve this season. In Season 3 we learned that Peter Pan was really Rumplestiltskin’s dad and the Wicked Witch was really Regina’s half-sister. “We will go on record as saying that we are not going to reveal that, for example, Elsa is somebody’s sister,” Horowitz said.
Belle’s role was minimized in Season 3 but we’re hearing she’ll get more screen time in Season 4. Inside TV quoted Horowitz as promising that fans will learn more about her this season.
“We are going to meet Belle’s mother,” executive producer Adam Horowitz tells EW. “For the first time, we’ll delve into Belle’s past pre-the encounter with Rumple.”
What the significance of meeting Belle’s mom is remains cloaked in mystery. It could be a flashback that explains why Belle is as good and true as she is. It might tie into her recent marriage to Rumple who is keeping a big secret from her.
Our dashing Captain Hook is in for a bit of dating and updating in Season 4. When Season 3 of “Once Upon a Time” wrapped, he and Emma had just shared their first kiss. The showrunners have said the couple will get the chance to go on a real date in Season 4. However, Storybrooke is a crazy place. Don’t expect their date to be calm and sedate.
Now that he’s going to be a more permanent resident of Storybrooke, the dashing leather-clad pirate is going to be getting a makeover. Shedding the heavy leather swashbuckler’s coat he’s worn almost nonstop is something he approached the producers about.
Colin O’Donoghue, who plays Hook, said to TV Line, “I’ve mentioned it, and it’s going to happen this season – people will get to see Hook in more modern clothes. So I’m intrigued to see how Hook will feel in them, how he’ll fit in…. I guess he’s been wearing the same clothes for 300-something years, so I just hope he can get them off, that they haven’t actually become a part of him.”
“Once Upon a Time‘s” “Frozen” storyline will play out over the first 11 episodes of Season 4. The series will premieres on Sunday, Sept. 28 on ABC.
