Granny: “When I put over easy on the menu, I was talking about the eggs.”
“Welcome to Storybrooke” is the newest episode of Once Upon a Time. Be warned, this article contains spoilers, every article has a price. Once Upon a Time airs Sunday nights at 7 on ABC (KTRK).
Viewers finally get to see the early days of the curse. Now, of course, there are still some questions. Through Regina’s point of view, viewers learn that almost the exact same thing happens every day. Now, there may be slightly different conversations, but that’s really the only change, and it is a minor one. What the writers need to do next is show some flashbacks of Henry growing up in Storybrooke because then viewers can see how he (and assumedly the other kids) age in Storybrooke, as well as if Henry notices that basically everything happens the exact same way every day. What are your theories? Do you think Gold is pretending to be confused in the flashback or does he really not know what Regina is talking about when she comes to visit him at the shop?
Regina’s inability to love is really showcased in this episode. The writers don’t really do anything to explain why she is this way, previous flashbacks really focus on that more. Instead they focus on demonstrating just how warped her belief of how love and family works really is. She makes a connection with Owen, a young boy who accidentally ended up in Storybrooke with his father when the curse manifested. From this connection, she assumes she can just keep him there. This is a nice way to show Regina attempt to love and have a family, and it allows viewers to see how far she has come since then. What did you think of Regina’s interactions with Owen?
In present day Storybrooke, Henry finds that he has something in common with his dad. Like Neal, he also believes that without magic, all of his problems would be solved. This is a little annoying. Yes, it is through magic that Regina plans on attacking Mary Margaret, and well how anyone attacks anyone in that town. However, Henry has always been so interested in fairytale characters and the curse that it’s strange to see him start wishing for normalcy. Maybe if Henry had shown doubt in previous episodes, just in little moments, then this would have made a little more sense. That being said, he is literally in the middle of a powerful magic rivalry, and things are getting serious, so all of this could have pushed him to the edge. What’s your opinion?
