Episode 6, entitled “Ariel,” was all about the little mermaid and her backstory with Snow White. It aired on “Once Upon A Time” on Sunday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. In it we learned what she would do for love and friendship.
IN the Fairy Tale Land that was, Snow was being chased by the Evil Queen’s henchmen. Rather than be caught, she took a perilous plunge off a cliff into unknown waters where she was knocked unconscious. Ariel saved her and brought her to land where the two had a chat. We learned that Ariel had once saved another human, Prince Eric. Though he too was unconscious and probably doesn’t remember, she fell instantly in love with him.
Blessed with the ability to swap her fins for feet for 12 hours at high tide, she hopes to attend a ball he throwing that evening. Snow agrees to go with her for moral support.
At the ball, the two meet and Eric reveals he has dreamed of her face since the day Ursula, the Sea Goddess, plucked him from the sea. He is leaving in the morning on a worldwide expedition and invites her along. Afraid to tell him the truth about her true nature, she says only that she will think about it.
In a desperate attempt to change her fate, she returns to the shoreline and prays to Ursula for help. Regina, who has been watching the goings on through her magic mirror, decides to assume the role of Ursula and appears to Ariel to make a deal.
The unwitting Ariel returns to Snow, tells her Ursula has granted her wish to keep her legs permanently so she can be with her Prince. She snaps a bracelet on Snow and immediately Snow’s legs turn into a mermaid tail. Ariel agreed to this because now Snow could live out her life as a mermaid, away from the grasp of the Evil Queen.
Duped, Ariel is stunned when Regina appears and she discovers she has just traded her friend’s life for her own happiness. Snow tells her to go, it’s ok. Ariel leaves to find her prince and Regina uses to magic to strangle Snow.
Ariel runs up from behind and stabs Regina with the fork she stuck in her pocket during the ball. She runs to Snow and removes the bracelet, putting it on her own arm. The mermaid tail changes places and Ariel dives into the water, taking Snow with her to escape the wrath of the queen.
Once on dry land again, Snow tells Ariel to find Eric before he leaves and urges her to tell him the truth, thus letting true love prevail. Ariel takes her advice and swims to the castle. As she approaches, she sees Eric on the balcony and tries to call out to him but her voice is gone. Regina appears and reminds her that there are no second chances and that she has lost her prince forever.
Back in Neverland, Regina and Rumplestiltskin have joined forces. They will find Henry and get off the island. He tells her there is a magic item back in his shop in Storybrooke. Regina summons Ariel, who can travel between worlds, and offers her a deal – her legs permanently in exchange for her going to Storybrooke to retrieve the item.
This was the best episode of season 3 of “Once Upon a Time” and where the story goes from here is anybody’s guess. Tune in on Sundays at 7 p.m. to find out and check back often for updates, news and spoilers.
