When “Once Upon A Time” ended for its winter break, Emma and Mary Margaret had returned to Storybrooke. Unknown to them and the rest of the town, Cora and Captain Hook had also arrived and in episode 10, “The Cricket Game” which aired Jan. 6 at 7 p.m., that arrival spelled trouble for Regina.
In Cora’s mind, the only way to get Regina back is to make her need her again and the only way to do that is to help Regina hit rock bottom. Cora was even able to convince Hook not to set off on his own plan of revenge right away but to stick around and help her.
The story plays out with Regina showing up at the welcome home party for Emma and Mary Margaret. Emma announces she invited Regina and wants to give her a chance to prove she is really trying to change – for Henry’s sake. Mary Margaret, David and the rest of the town are skeptical.
Suring a conversation between Emma and Regina, Regina learns that Archie told Emma that Regina is seeing him as a patient and is really trying to make changes. This infuriates Regina who later confronts Archie about his breach of diplomacy. Ruby sees the two arguing.
Later that night, Ruby sees Regina entering Archie’s office. Regina again confronts Archie but this time she chokes him and leaves him lying on the floor. When his body is discovered the next day, David and Mary Margaret are convinced it was Regina, especially after Ruby tells them what she knows.
Emma however is not convinced. She, David and Mary Margaret head over to see Mr. Gold as he is the only person with motive to set Regina up. After denying any involvement, Gold tells Emma that she herself is capable of using magic and gives her a dream catcher with which to examine Pongo’s memory as the dog was the only witness to what occurred. With it, Emma sees Regina literally choke the life out of Archie and leaves to arrest Regina.
At Regina’s house, the two exchange heated words and Regina vanishes in a cloud of purple smoke before Emma can arrest her. Emma’s next task is to tell Henry that one of his favorite people has been killed by his adoptive mother. She waits for him at the school bus stop. Parked nearby is Regina who watches, devastated that Henry will now think she is the evil person he always feared her to be. Cora’s plan is complete. Regina has lost everything.
Meanwhile, back in Fairytale land, Snow White and Charming have captured Regina, the Evil Queen. After a panel discussion, it is agreed she should be put to death. On the day of her execution, she is brought before the court and offered the chance to say something. She talks about regretting all the evil she has done and the pain she has caused but regrets even more that she didn’t cause more of it. Mostly she regrets not killing Snow White when she had the chance.
Charming gives the order to fire and Snow White yells to stop> the Blue Fairy freezes the arrows and Snow wants the execution stayed for the time being. She remembers Regina from her child hood as a good person. She wants to see if there is a chance that part of her still lives.
Rumplestiltskin appears to Snow and strikes a bargain. He will provide a test Snow can use to see if Regina still has any good left inside.
Snow goes to Regina, dismisses the guard and opens the cell door. She explains that she remembers how Regina saved her life and wants to give her a second chance. Once out of the cell. Regina grabs Snow by the throat and lifts her off the ground in a choke hold. Snow reaches for a knife she had secreted away but Regina takes it from her. Cackling, she plunges the knife into Snow White.
Charming, Rumplestitlskin and the guards step out of hiding and Snow stands up, unhurt. Regina learns that a protection spell has been placed on Snow and Charming. Regina can never hurt them in this land for the rest of her life. They banish her from the kingdom.
Latr in her palace, Rumplestiltskin comes to see Regina and informs her there was a catch in the protection spell. It only works in this land, not other lands. Regina then devised the plan to move Fairytale land occupants to Storybrooke.
At the end of “The Cricket Game,” Cora returns to the dock to find Hook waiting listlessly on the ship. She informs him that she left a gift for him below decks. Someone who can help him learn all the secrets of Storybrooke and exact his revenge on Rumplestiltskin. It’s Archie. He isn’t dead after all. Seems Cora killed someone else and then made the body look like Archie.
