It has been announced, today, July 3rd, 2014 by Entertainment Weekly, that an Elsa has been cast for “Once Upon a Time” season four. Since the finale in May, fans have been waiting eagerly for news of who is playing the beloved “Frozen” character on the show.
The role of Elsa, Queen of Arendelle, is Georgina Haig. Georgina Haig comes to “Once Upon a Time” with experience from “Fringe” under her belt and her frosty beauty may be just what we need for the role with Elizabeth Lail as her sister Anna and Scott Michael Foster as Kristoff, newcomer to Palace life and love interest to Anna.
In “Frozen”, Elsa has powers over ice and snow, causing an accidental childhood injury to her sister. Frightened for her safety, the King and Queen hide her and keep the outside away from the Palace, until her Coronation. Anna upsets her sister, Elsa, at the coronation celebration, and Elsa runs from her actions, setting off an eternal winter into her Queendom. Anna pursues Elsa, assisted with Kristoff, to show her love is the key to controlling her power.
At the end of Season Three on “Once Upon a Time”, an urn from Rumplestiltskin’s (Robert Carlyle) Dark Castle is brought back, and accidentally opened by magic. A mysterious gloved woman in a blue gown appears, removes a glove and conjures ice to destroy the urn, marching out of the barn leaving a trail of frost behind her.
Previous interviews from the Creators have confirmed that this was Elsa from the well-known Disney film, and that a “Frozen” arc is coming to “Once Upon a Time”. Yesterday, casting for Anna and Kristoff had been announced around the media world, with everyone guessing who would play Elsa. The creators have teased whether or not Elsa will be good or evil, hinting they'll leave it ambiguous as the film had.
Viewers may find out in the September premiere how Elsa got into Rumpelstiltskin's castle.
Georgina Haig was born in Australia, something she shares with "Once" actress Emilie de Ravin. Emilie portrays Belle, a favorite character who was seen married to her true love, Rumplestiltskin. Perhaps viewers are in for a possible friendship between Rumplestiltskin's new wife and the Ice Queen?
Casting for Elsa was just in time, as “Once Upon a Time” traditionally starts shooting mid-July for their September premiers.
“Once Upon a Time” will return September 2014 on ABC at 8 pm.
