The much awaited ninth episode “Save Henry” of season 3 of “Once Upon A Time” aired Sunday, Dec. 1 and while somewhat anticlimactic, we still got some good insight into Regina and a nice twist at the end.
In a flashback to the early days of Storybrooke, Regina is feeling a void, just as Rumplestiltskin predicted. She seeks him out to help her arrange an adoption because she is unwilling to wait the prerequisite two years most agencies want. A short time later he informs her that a baby has been found in Boston and off she goes to swoop up her new son, Henry – named for her father in case you missed that nuance.
She struggles as a mother as Henry is not an easy baby. He cries constantly and she is at her wits end. Dr. Whale tells her he can find nothing wrong and even Mary Margaret can calm him. Regina is desperate to find an answer to this motherhood thing.
In Neverland, Neal tends to an unconscious Henry. Emma, Regina and Mary Margaret have bribed the Lost Boys with promise of escaping the Island and Pan in exchange for learning that Pan has gone to his Thinking Tree to wait for his body to absorb Henry’s heart. Hook has gone with David, Wendy, Tinkerbell and the Lost Boys to ready the Jolly Roger for departure.
The three gals are captured by the tree as the tree is able to detect regret. They are bound by vines when Pan appears and taunts them. He explains to them who is in relation to Rumple. Regina, however, claims she has no regrets, breaks free of her bonds and snatches Henry’s heart back out of Pan’s chest. She also grabs Pandora’s Box from him and Pan falls to the ground. The trio race back to the ship.
Henry’s heart is returned to him and Rumple is freed from the box. He confirms he can save David when they reach Storybrooke and they unleash The Shadow to make the Jolly Roger fly.
Below decks, Henry is trying to rest when Pan appears to him and tries to steal his heart again. Regina placed a protection spell on him so he can’t. Furious, he tries to rip off Henry’s shadow. Mr. Gold steps into the room, opens Pandora’s Box and captures Pan. However, during the struggle for Henry’s shadow, there was a flicker of something between Pan and Henry revealed only to the viewers and seen for the briefest moment in their eyes. Uh-oh.
Later, Henry comes topside, saying he is feeling much better. He seeks out Felix, the only Lost Boy who wasn’t willing to betray Pan. Henry, er, Pan reveals to Felix that he is alive and well in Henry’s body and the two of them begin to concoct their plans to have some fun.
Back in early Storybrooke, Regina seeks out Henry’s birthmother and learns she may have been Prince Charming and Snow White’s daughter who escaped the curse. She confronts Mr. Gold but he plays dumb and feigns any knowledge of she is talking about. Frustrated and worried the child could be a problem, she prepares to return him to the adoption agency but at the last minute has a change of heart. She returns home and takes a potion that makes her forget her concerns about Henry’s origins.
We see that the agency had another couple lined up for Henry’s adoption, none other than John and Michael Darling who were already working for Pan and trying to free their sister.
Next week, episode 10, “The New Neverland” airs and we will be watching to see if the townies will figure out Henry is really Pan now. We also want to see how Mr. Gold deals with Daddy dearest once his identity is revealed. We need to see what happens to David and whether or not Gold’s elixir really works. What do you want to see happen on the next installment of “Once Upon A Time”?
