The first local spring tournament for high school golfers in Las Cruces began today with the first round of the 2010 Dona Ana Classic at Picacho Hills Country Club. The final round will be played tomorrow at New Mexico State University Golf Course.
It is no surprise that the course conditioning for these two superb championship courses will be near perfect at this time of year, but just three days after the largest wind storm of the season, players and coaches alike were grateful to begin their season on such a tremendous afternoon.
The boy’s competition is led by a group of fine local golfers from Onate High School who used their strength in scoring depth to seize an eight stroke lead over Deming. All four of the Knights scoring golfers on Monday hold a position in the top six for all individual scorers. Ian Christenson fired a first round 77 and enters the second round of the Classic tied for the lead with Derek Baeza and Derek Perales of Deming. Isaac Merry, of Onate, finds himself one stroke behind the leaders after a six-over par 78 on the demanding layout and will look forward to an exciting finish on the University Course which will ultimately separate the best from the rest.
The day was also highlighted by other local young golfers who took the opportunity provided by great scoring conditions including: Greg Patti of Mesilla Valley Christian with an 81 (5th place), Jacob Chavez of Mayfield and Aaron Morales and Richard Puentes both from Onate with an 83 (T-6th place), and Gabe Ontiveros of Chaparral and Scott Adler of Mesilla Valley Christian both with 84’s (T-9th place).
The weather is predicted to be even better tomorrow, and with first round competitive “jitters” out of the way, a highly talented crop of young talent should offer a fine exhibition that will be on display beginning early tomorrow morning in Las Cruces.
