It's that time of the year again! Next week, the 33rd inaugural CMJ Music Marathon will take over New York City, bringing together over 120,000 music lovers and providing them the opportunity to discover the next big artists. Over the course of four days, 1,400 performances will take place at 80 venues across Manhattan and Brooklyn. This year's showcase, once again worthy of the "marathon" designation, introduces an intense lineup of acts carefully culled from every genre of music. While the list may seem intimidating, rest assured that even amongst the bevy of performances, you are destined to find that artist (or artists) that takes over your playlist and becomes your newest obsession.
The secret to CMJ's success as a music discovery hub is in its abbreviated sets stacked on top of one another. With performances running no longer than 45 minutes, artists are forced to carefully craft their sets in order to truly standout amongst their many peers. In the past, artists like Arcade Fire, Icona Pop, Kendrick Lamar, Mumford & Sons have all had breakout performances at CMJ that have ultimately contributed heavily to their discovery by mainstream audiences. This year, there is no shortage of artists poised to experience that kind of coveted recognition; the question is, will you be able to find them before everyone else does?
The Showcase Only pass, offered through Livingsocial for $159, grants admission to all 1,400 showcase performances (note: this does not include the music panels, workshops and seminars that CMJ also offers; visit the CMJ website to learn more.) If you're not looking to buy a full access badge, individual admission is being offered at select shows (see the schedule to find out which ones). If you do plan on attending multiple shows, keep in mind that each show is first come, first serve so get their early, stay hydrated and plan your night accordingly.
