On this day, August 9, 1969, cult leader Charles Manson and his disciples committed one of Los Angeles’ most heinous crimes. They entered the home of movie director Roman Polanski and brutally murdered Polanski’s wife (actress Sharon Tate), movie director Voityck Frykowski, famous hair stylist Jay Sebring, student Steven Parent and coffee heiress Abigail Folger.

A maid would find each of these people, in addition to an unidentified man in a car, dead. All had been repeatedly stabbed, some shot, others mutilated. The word “pig” had been scrawled in blood on the walls.While Polanski was in London. Polanski was in London making a film. He rushed home when he heard the news.

Even though Manson had not been present and it took several months before the police could sort through all the evidence, they clearly concluded that Manson had masterminded the event.

Polansky and Tate had only been married in January of that year, a period which Polanski would refer to as the happiest time of his life.
