Red Wings

1905: Former Red Wings’ left winger Lloyd “Bomber” Gross (1933-35) was born on this day in Kitchener, Ontario. Gross played 19 games for Detroit and scored two goals and one assist for three points.

1941: Former Red Wings’ goalie Harrison Gray (1963-64) was born on this day in Calgary. Gray played one game for Detroit (40 minutes) and recorded a loss and a goals-against average of 7.50.

1949: Former Red Wings center Bill Hogaboam (1972-76; 1978-80) was born on this day in Swift Current, Saskatchewan. Hogaboam played 221 games for Detroit and scored 61 goals and 84 assists for 145 points.

1953: Former Red Wings’ right winger Ken Mann (1975-76) was born on this day in Hamilton, Ontario. Mann played one game for Detroit and did not record a point.

1965: Former Red Wings’ defenseman Mark Ferner (1995) was born on this day in Regina, Saskatchewan. Ferner played three games for Detroit and did not record a point.

1974: The Red Wings hired Denis DeJordy as their first goaltender coach.

NHL

1938: The NHL’s first “enforcer” John Ferguson was born on this day in Vancouver. Ferguson played 500 games for the Montreal Canadiens during an eight-year career (1963-71) and won five Stanley Cups. He scored 145 goals and 158 assists for 303 points while earning 1,214 penalty minutes. Ferguson served notice that he had arrived just 12 seconds into his first game when he beat up Terrible Ted Green and then went on to lead all rookies in scoring.
