On this date in Beatles history, the Fab Four just 'Let It Be'

On March 6, 1970, "Let It Be" was released as a single in the UK.

It wasn't their best song, but the title was appropriate.

Here's a video of the song.

"Let It Be" wasn't their worst song either. It certainly came out at a time that young Boomers were recovering from the tumultuous year of 1968. We were torn up from assassinations, shredded political campaigns, the divisive and hated war in Southeast Asia and a loss of innocence from the "Summer of Love" only 2 years earlier.

"Let It Be" was a requiem for the 60's, almost synonymous with the Beatles and their breakup. The spirit of '64 was gone and the tremendous creativity and amazing music of the era would shift into something else, not as vibrant or colorful.

I remember like it was just last week. It doesn't seem that long ago, but it was soooo long ago. I was just a kid then. (13) Thanks for the memories Steve...

Wasn't their best song? Well, perhaps not. But, can we list several dozen that it WAS better than?

No, actually, here's a better barometer: where does it rank in Beatles songs covered by other artists? I'd bet it's in the top ten.

I'd be hard pressed to say "best" about any of their songs, but Let It Be is a great song. Beautiful and sad, full of hope. One of Paul's best lyrics by far. And the band sounds great, as always. I remember the last time I heard it, thinking: that's almost perfectly constructed and executed, a work of art, honestly felt.

My wife and I plan to have Let It Be played at our funerals. Fabulous song and I remember vividly when it was released (number one for about 8 weeks on WDRC AM). Very appropriate since it's about Paul's mother. You're not getting a little snooty Steve, are you? However, because of your great posts you get the benefit of the doubt. But I cancelled my subscription to Rolling Stone because of the way they dis Paul in favor of John.

What's with the absent minded comment "It's Wasn't their best song" like it was some throw away or something? Not very well thought out for someone who runs a Beatles site, is it Steve? It was one of their biggest hits and really is a beautifully heart felt song. Hear any songs lately that are as good? Please list them for me, I'd love to hear them.

Everyone has their favorite songs and, in Steve's opinion, this isn't one of them. He's certainly entitled to his opinion. Maybe his favorites would be considered "not one of their best" by someone else.
I love your articles, Steve, keep 'em coming!

Let it Be is one of their best. There is no doubt about it. It touches so many people of all different age groups.
