On this date in Beatle history - Lucy in the sky, with outtakes

On March 1, 1967, recording was begun on "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." The first seven takes were worked on March 1, while take 8 was done March 2, according to Mark Lewisohn's "The Beatles Recording Sessions."

The song had been rehearsed Feb. 28, but recording wasn't started until this date. Above is a portion of take 1, which includes comments from Sir Paul McCartney and Sir George Martin. (We like McCartney's little comment at the end of the clip.) Below is takes 6-8.

It's hard to believe that this timeless LP was recorded, mixed and photos shot and released by early June of the same year... the Fab's really created a miracle.

I LOVE this outtake/early run through/whatever it is...John's vocal, probably a guide vocal, is both monotonous and tongue in cheek...it's a fantastic glimpse into the recording process. Now, you can't tell me there aren't VOLUMES of things like this in the vaults that would make fantastic companion CD sets to the Anthology releases. Great stuff!

The first video is from the Making of Pepper that I saw many years ago on Disney Channel. I am glad I taped it because it hasn't been on very much since, if at all. It seems like a show that is made for VH-1 Classic.

Paul B: It was shown in September when VH-1 Classic did their big countdown to the release of Rock Band: The Beatles. I taped a lot of stuff then and I'm glad I did. I agree these things should be shown more often. Cool stuff!
