While Stonewall was certainly an important event in GLBT history it was not the beginning of the movment... just an event along the way.
On These Shoulders We Stand is an historical account of early gay life and activism in Los Angeles told by the people who lived it. The 75-minute documentary chronicles the lives of 11 people from Los Angeles’ LGBT community, from their early years to their coming out, to their groundbreaking activism for the rights of all LGBT people. The film was winner of the Outfest 2009 Special Programming Award for Freedom.
The film It documents how the Los Angeles’ gay community has had a national impact on issues as diverse as the first amendment, the entertainment industry and the civil rights movement. Originally part of the Impact Project, a gay rights oral history, the interviews were conducted by Project Director, Glenne McElhinney, an oral historian.
