The summer issue of Gotham Magazine hit newsstands yesterday on June 27, 2014 and the premier luxury lifestyle publishing company Niche Media and Gotham magazine, along with renowned artist Peter Max and President of The Humane Society of the United States, Wayne Pacelle, all celebrated a unique collaboration between the publishing house and artist at Loews Regency Hotel.

VIPs and tastemakers enjoyed a first look at ten original paintings exclusively designed by Max to serve as cover art for each of Niche Media’s ten regional titles, including New York’s Gotham magazine. Read our exclusive interview with Max below:

What was the inspiration behind the summer cover pieces?

Peter Max: I was just inspired. By just the ability to draw and paint. So I just do it, it’s not like I get inspired here and there, I’m just all the time inspired. Like some people have a melody going on all the time, I have art and melodies going in my brain all the time.

Why did you decide to partner with the Humane Society?

PM: Because the Humane Society takes care of animals and my wife, Mary, and I are very involved in animal protection.

Are you working on anything for the future?

PM: I have dozens of projects.

Why did you decide to partner with Niche Media?

PM: Well they asked me to do some covers and I was very glad to do them, plus it was the right subject matter and it interested me.

Fans of Max and the magazines will have the opportunity to bid on the original artwork on CharityBuzz to benefit The Humane Society of the United States. Additionally, 25 limited-edition posters of each magazine’s cover art will also be available for purchase. For more information, visit here.
