For the Naeem Khan woman, life will be a cabaret this fall. Indeed, the designer’s luxurious collection hearkens back to the early burlesque days of the 20s. A lively audience gathered at The Theater at Lincoln Center Tuesday Feb. 11 for Khan’s presentation as part of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Top Chef host and former model Padma Lakshmi could be seen amongst other fashion elite in The Theater’s front row, including photographer Bill Cunningham, Nina Garcia, and SVP of Bergdorf Goodman Linda Fargo. Actresses Holland Roden, Debby Ryan, and Laura Vandervoort also posed for photos before the show.
The designer presented 44 looks in total, a vision of contemporary boudoir style. Models oozed with dark, sensual glamour as they slinked down the runway to the beat of DJ Chelsea Leyland’s mix. A weightless quality graced many gowns, including several light-as-air slip dresses, and one metallic pleated lame halter gown—Khan’s clothes are clearly made to move with the body. Not one to shy away from prints, the designer made bold use of leopard, floral, and honeycomb patterns. A rich color palette of black, gold, ruby, and sapphire enhanced the luxurious look of the fabrics, while gilded embroidery, feather embellishments, crystals, and beading added a playful quality reminiscent of flapper dresses.
Some of the most eye-catching looks of the evening came in bold, metallic shades of bronze, gold, and silver. One in particular, a cocktail dress made entirely of long strands of fringe that swayed with the model’s every move, burst with a bright harlequin-print of silver and gold—This dress was made to be danced in. Khan’s decadent new looks will certainly appeal to daring fashionistas looking for the perfect cocktail attire this fall.
