Promising mystery and romance with her old-meets-new collection of evening wear and shoes for Fall ’14, fashion designer Monique Lhuillier pulled out all the stops at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week on Saturday, Feb. 8. Known for her devoted celebrity following, Lhuillier packed the front row of The Theatre at Lincoln Center with some of Hollywood’s most fashionable stars including Emmy Rossum, Anna Kendrick, Jamie Chung, and Louise Roe.

This was certainly a presentation of bold proportions, featuring 42 complete looks with accompanying footwear. Models glided boldly down the runway to the beat of D.J. Javier Peral’s moody, bass-infused score, which complemented the designer’s vision of mixing classical and modern style elements. Lhuillier’s collection was replete with her trademark gowns and cocktail dresses, as well as chic gaucho pants and boleros. A cool color palette dominated by black and slate prevailed, with unexpected pops of petal pink, bronze, and fuchsia. With each look, Lhuillier found ways to incorporate fresh, modern details, whether it be sharp cutouts extending down the shoulders of a shimmering black evening dress, or alien-like candy pink embroidery covering the sheer neckline of a playful cocktail dress. The designer’s bold use of vinyl in pencil skirts and trench coats added a futuristic touch to the classic cold-weather staples. Footwear was all about black lace and suede detailing, which lent a romantic air to booties and pumps.

One of the evening’s most memorable looks, a black and nude “lace net long sleeve midi dress,” created the suggestive illusion of bare skin sheathed in sheer black net. Simple long sleeves and a high, round neckline saved the look from being too overtly sexy—the overall effect is sensual, yet chic, and the epitome of what makes Lhuillier such a favorite among the fashion-set.
