On the scene: Jack Spade's Fall 2014 presentation

Kate Spade's brother brand Jack Spade made its New York Fashion Week debut on Feb. 6 at the New York Public Library. The F/W '14 presentation was all about “the art of subtraction,” according to design director Todd Magill. It was an understated collection chock full of meticulous tailoring and astounding accessories that the brand is known for.

Models stood in the center of a private room in the library, surrounded by wood furnishings, paintings, and, of course, books, a supposed nod to the borrow libraries available in stores. Even the guys were given books to thumb through throughout the presentation. Meanwhile, guests sipped prosecco and Brooklyn Lager (yep, even at 11a.m.).

Why did the brand choose to show for the first time this year?

"We thought the collection this season looked really great and we have a lot of momentum going with Kate Spade. We thought it was time for Jack to step it up," Magill told Racked. "It's much more elevated, sophisticated. We introduced tailoring this season and we elevated the sportswear to align with the fact that we're doing tailored garments now."

And tailoring is what the brand does best (other than accessories, of course). The 17 looks were a mix of cozy tailored separates, outerwear, and suits. Highlights included a parkas with a shearling collar, a gorgeous pinstriped suit, and several trenches. And, of course, the brand didn't skimp on the accessories, outfitting each look with a bag whether it was a briefcase, gym bag, or backpack.

What's next? "We really want to to grow as a lifestyle brand," Magill told Racked. "We introduced eyewear this year—sun and optical— as well as tailoring, and we want to keep that momentum going. We want to design for everything in his life."
