The stars were out for Tuesday afternoon’s presentation of Dennis Basso’s Spring/Summer ’14 Show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Indeed, high-profile front row guests including Brooke Shields, Olivia Palermo, Bill Cunningham, and Kelly Bensimon. Couture designer Basso is known for his work with furs, and he didn’t shy away from fur accents with this warm weather collection.
The designer was inspired by golden age Hollywood screen goddesses like Ava Gardner and Rita Hayworth; indeed, a Hollywood regency effect was felt throughout the entire show, with many looks featuring bold geometric patterns harkening back to the 30s and 40s. A black and white color palette pervaded most of the looks, but well-placed tangerine and baby blue accents added unexpected pops of color. One sky blue satin ball gown with an ethereally voluminous skirt elicited gasps from the audience, while several crocodile vests and jackets created a more modern feel.
Simple, low ponytails and bold brows balanced the models’ couture looks nicely—an elegant effect for spring evenings. Many carried streamlined totes of alligator, python, and ostrich, completing the looks for a cocktail party or night on the town. In one final flourish (and much to the delight of his adoring fans), Basso himself strutted the runway to close out the show. The standing ovation that met the designer was certainly telling of the line’s appeal to New York’s fashion-set.
"For the Spring/Summer 2014 Dennis Basso show, the makeup look featured a flawless face with a perfectly, black-lined top lash and matte bright lip to capture the freshness of the collection that mixed Hollywood glamour with a youthful ease," created by makeup artist Kabuki, assisted by Erik Soto and Sephora PRO.
Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week ran from September 5 through September 12.
