The Fall/Winter 2014 collection from Emerson by Jackie Fraser-Swan on Feb. 7, was heavily influenced by the witching hour and "American Horror Story: Coven" and themes around “Break the Mold”.
The redesigned Pavillion at Lincoln Center was the show venue with a larger square room and seating that can be modified for every show. For Emerson, the laid out formed a large X for the runway giving the show an art gallery feel and the audience up-close views from multiple angles. The show had a dramatic opening with the song "Team" by Lorde and a projection of a mirror shattering on the main runway wall.
We attended the presentation as guests of beauty sponsor Essie. Jackie Fraser-Swan’s shows always have great music perfectly aligned with the collection she is showing. For the Fall/Winter 2014 collection, haunting music by the NY-based DJ collective included "Once Upon a Dream" by Lana Del Rey, "House of the Rising Sun" by Lauren O’Connell and "Glitter in Their Eyes" by Patti Smith. In the audience were Actress Stefanie Scott, DJ Leigh Lezark of The Misshapes, singer-songwriter Jacquie Lee, actress Diane Guerrero, actor Eric West, model Shaun Ross, actress Tashiana Washington, and tattoo artist Luke Wessman.
The collection was dark with leather and knits in black, blue and greys yet feminine with chiffon, sequins, lace and pops of lavender and pale pink. The models wore Dr. Martin shoes and boots adding the punk rock edge we’ve come to expect from the Emerson collections. Make-up was pale yet haunting with hair in messy braids highlighted in subtle lavender.
Dresses and gowns were fitted with body flattering cuts and peeks of skin with sheer chiffon sleeves; all edgy and sexy yet with a hint of schoolgirl innocence. Skirts and pants of black sequin had black chiffon inserts showed flirtatious pops of skin toped with blouses of sheer chiffon with fine details. Representing the with Fraser-Swan motto of the season, a charcoal grey knit top was emblazoned with “Break the Mold” in black sequins was paired with a black sequin mini extended with black chiffon panels.
The final look was a breathtaking gown of black sequins on sheer fabric with a plunging V-neck and stripes of sequins and chiffon to the floor. Maleficent herself could only dream of such a gown.
