2012 U.S. Olympic wrestling team hopeful Elena Pirozhkova, and former Indiana University wrestler Mike Powell have been announced as featured guests for the "On The Mat" radio broadcast this Wednesday, Feb. 15, the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum announced Wednesday.
Each week “On the Mat” will interview an Olympic wrestling hopeful leading up to the Olympic Trials in Iowa City on April 21-22. This week’s interview is with Elena Pirozhkova.
- Pirozhkova will compete at the 138.75 pound weight class at the Olympic Trials. Pirozhkova, winner of the 2011 U.S. Open and a four-time World team member, placed second at the World Championships in 2010.
- Powell was the subject of a feature-length article that ran in the Feb. 13, 2012, issue of Sports Illustrated. Powell, an All-American for the Indiana Hoosiers in 1996, coaches wrestling at Oak Park-River Forest High School in Illinois. He suffers from a muscle-wasting disease called polymyositis.
