Sunday afternoon, the U.S. Men's National Team won its second game in the three-game World Cup Send-Off series with a 2-1 result over Turkey for a sellout crowd of 26,762 at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.
Fabian Johnson, assisted by Michael Bradley, scored the left-footed go-ahead goal in the 26th minute. Clint Dempsey then scored an easy unassisted game-winner and his 37th career goal when Turkey's defense bumbled in front of the net in the 52nd minute. Selcuk Inan spoiled the shut-out with a converted penalty in the 90th minute.
Head coach Jurgen Klinsmann made three changes in his 4-4-2 from the starting lineup versus Azerbaijan on May 27. Defender Timmy Chandler and midfielder Brad Davis replaced DaMarcus Beasley and Alejandro Bedoya, respectively, in the starting lineup and captain Clint Dempsey started for Chris Wondolowski.
Goalkeeper Tim Howard (54-28-15), who manned the net for the first half, set a USMNT record with the 54th win of his career, breaking Kasey Keller's record. Brad Guzan played the second half. The defense was staffed by left back Chandler, center backs Matt Besler and Geoff Cameron and right back Fabian Johnson. The midfield featured Davis and Graham Zusi on the left and right sides, respectively, Jermaine Jones as the holding midfielder and Michael Bradley at the top of the diamond. Dempsey and Jozy Altidore paired up front.
At the half, Guzan replaced Howard, Kyle Beckerman subbed for Jones, and John Brooks entered for Besler. In the 64th minute, Julian Green made a disappointing second career USMNT appearance, replacing Davis, and DeAndre Yedlin entered for Johnson.
The US concludes its three-game Send-Off Series against Nigeria at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, June 7, at EverBank Field in Jacksonville, Florida.The game will be broadcast on ESPN, WatchESPN, Univision and ESPN Deportes Radio.
