On prayer flags, ordinary heroes, and reminder of good intentions

Like everyone, I face the New Year with the best of intentions; resolution list in hand, promise myself that this year I will lose those extra pounds, walk a mile every day. At this time of year, we each think about the past, hope for the future and resolve that we will take the steps to make that future better. We send our prayers out to the universe.

In Tibet, prayer flags are hung in high places in the hope that blessings are carried to all beings. Tibetans believe the prayers and mantras will be blown by the wind to spread the good will and compassion. Unlike the disposable streamers and party hats of our traditional New Year's Eve celebration, "the prayers of a flag become a permanent part of the universe as the images fade from exposure to the elements. Just as life moves on and is replaced by new life, Tibetans renew their hopes for the world by continually mounting new flags alongside the old." For all of us, the new year brings hope of an acceptance and memory of the past and some new beginning.

When January is over, as we move further into the year, we easily forget resolutions and promises. This is when the extraordinary acts of ordinary individuals remind us. Not sports heroes, movie heroes or even world leaders but ordinary heroes; people like you and me, whose actions serve to remind us what small difference we can make every day.

"Kyle Nutt And Zade Abdullah, Illinois Teenagers, Dress Up As Superheroes To Perform Acts Of Kindness For Strangers" was a recent story by Alexamdra Zaslow, published in The Huffington Post. This is a story about two ordinary 16 year olds who dressed up as superheroes and spent a week going around their town in downstate, Illinois performing acts of kindness. Watch the video. You don't have to dress in tights and cape or hand out money. How about sharing a smile, speaking a kind word, or showing a little bit of patience and good humor while waiting in line? The personal goals and list making is easy; every day actions pose the challenge, and make the difference. How will you spend your new year? Me? I want to be that ordinary hero.
