Internet crime is not just for stealing credit cards and identity. It is used for stalking, bullying and harassment of all ages. On the front lines, we have the US CERT. However the youngest victims also have a great sites that they, as well as their parents and caregivers can use as a great resource.

In a recent conversation with Laurie Myers, Founder of Community Voices, I had voiced some concern regarding recent inappropriate texts and “face time” requests that my 11 year old daughter had been participating in. Aside from the obvious dangers of receiving and participating in communications with unknown persons, I expressed a desire to get my daughter involved (in a volunteer aspect) in an organization with safety and education as its core values. That is where Community Voices comes in. While approaching different opportunities, Myers introduced me to a government run site called OnGuard Online Dot Gov.

It is a tremendous resource, that has so many resources that are divided into genres such as;

It can alert you to scams, teach you to protect you and your family as well as securing your computer and general online protection tips which they categorize as “Be smart online”. They have a blog that is updated almost daily with excellent well written info that is tailored in such a way, that even the most novice of computer users can understand it.

One part of the site that I found to be extremely useful is the fact that I could order a free “Net Cetera community outreach toolkit”, which will allow you or a student to spearhead a great resource presentation for a single class, a single school or a whole district.
