Today, my best friend sent me a link to the Washington, D.C. Examiner's story about the Metro expecting its riders to keep priority seating for the elderly and disabled actually open for the elderly and disabled.
It really seems like a reasonable request to me, but I'm the sort of person who sees the annoyingly-capitalized "Priority Seating for persons with disabilities" stickers in the New York subways and feels such an overwhelming sense of guilt that I couldn't sit on one of those seats even if I was having open heart surgery right there on the train.
What I really like is that the D.C. Metro is telling riders who need the seats to ask for them if they're being occupied. One of the main complaints made by the readers of the hilarious peoplewhositinthedisabilityseatswhenimstandingonmycrutches.com is that the guy should just ask for a seat if he needs it so badly, but even in New York City, we expect that someone will notice our need and offer their help freely.
And really, I'd much rather have to stand because people are rude than to be offered a seat by some nice man because he accidentally mistakes me for a pregnant woman.
