‘General Hospital’ hit a homerun when they cast two-time Emmy winner Maura West in the role of motivated mob queen Ava Jerome. Although the character is not popular with all viewers, the actress makes every scene she’s in very entertaining. She’s a smooth talker who will do whatever it takes to get what she wants, and what she wants is control of Port Charles. In an interview with TV Guide’s Michael Logan published on September 13, West talks about her new role on “General Hospital” and her acting future.
Ava is a character who arrived to Port Charles with an agenda. She is apart of a mob family that once terrorized some of GH’s current characters and she has also been used to usher in some of the newer characters like Franco (Roger Howarth), Silas Clay (Michael Easton), Kiki Jerome (Kirsten Anderson) and recently Derek Wells (William deVry) who is really Ava’s older brother Julian Jerome. West was excited to have been given such juicy story lines and told TV Guide that it is “awesome” to be playing a lady gangster.
“She didn’t marry into the mob. She is the mob. When you grow up watching your father come home and wash blood off his hands, you don’t give it much mind. There are no rules when you’ve been raised in a world like that - and that’s very freeing as an actor. I loooove Ava! I love that she is so poised - almost hyper-poised - as she struts around town yet she’s also gritty, angry, really abrasive. I love that she’s hiding things.”
It is that abrasiveness and secrecy that have made the character of Ava Jermone a character viewers love to hate. West knows fans are supposed to hate her character and admits that is what makes her fun but does hope GH fans will get to see Ava’s softer side eventually, because there is a soul somewhere underneath the tough exterior. In fact, West brought something to the role of Ava that prolonged her stay in Port Charles as she was originally written for just a few episodes.
“Ava was not intended to hang around all that long. The role was originally written for just five episodes. Basically, she was there to drop off Kiki [Kristen Alderson] and then leave time. By the time I left my meeting with Frank [Valentini], it was up to seven episodes, with the possibility of it becoming recurring. Then I was offered a contract before I even started my first day.”
The character of Ava seems to now have a few different connections in Port Charles. Maura West has been able to hold her own in scenes with some pretty big names in the soap world. She’s been in scenes with Roger Howarth, Michael Easton, Anthony Geary, Jane Elliot and will finally have scenes with Maurice Benard as Ava will come face to face with the man she is out to destroy. West says she just minds her own business being surrounded by so much great talent and is enjoying the experience.
As far as the future of her acting career, Maura West is content with daytime.
“I am not a snob about daytime at all - clearly! I think the daytime shows are great and can remain great and have just as much talent, if not more so, than primetime.”
Looks like Maura West plans on being apart of “General Hospital” as long as her character is needed in Port Charles.
