Today in our government- While the Administration extends the shutdown of National Parks, some Memorials, furloughed employees for another day after Congress didn't come to a compromise by the September 30 deadline for a (CR) continuing resolution bill and with the fast-approaching deadline to raise the debt limit in less than two weeks; President Obama addressed the Nation- and told his audience this:
“… I had a chance to speak with Speaker Boehner. And I told him what I've been saying publicly, that I am happy to talk with him and other Republicans about anything -- not just issues I think are important but also issues that they think are important. But I also told him that having such a conversation, talks, negotiations, shouldn't require hanging the threats of a government shutdown or economic chaos over the heads of the American people.”
The US budget year runs October 1st – September 30 and Congress approves government spending by passing a budget with 12 appropriations, specifically- agriculture, commerce, defense, energy-water, financial services, homeland, interior-environment, labor-HHS education, legislative, military construction, state- foreign operations and transportation- all of which employ hundreds of thousands of people-within your social circles, coworkers, neighbors, friends, family- you.
After the President’s news conference, both proponents and opponents moved to the floor to tout their favor to their constituents- with no ending resolve.
Millions of Americans are being affected by the government shutdown (many relic of Sequestration) and if not yet, the impending October 17 deadline will increase your odds.
When asked his priorities in an economic default plan, whether pay bondholders to maintain America’s creditworthiness or pay Social Security recipients or military service members- he said, ”I'm going to continue to be very hopeful that Congress does not put us in that position. And I think if people understand what the consequences are, they will set that potential scenario aside.”
Apropos, the remains of the four soldiers killed Sunday in Afghanistan by an IED (improvised explosive device), arrived at Dover AFB. They too- affected due to lack of appropriation of funds as their death benefit pay to their family members will be delayed- including flights to Delaware to receive their fallen soldier and burial costs. Dead bodies of soldiers deployed >7400 miles from home wagered in their ultimate sacrifice of serving their country- death.- Thanks to Fisher House Foundation- who has offered an advance grant to these families during the government shutdown.
Americans are consumed with multi-tasking, making ends meet, looking forward to sunrises, sunsets and moon gazing, and address trouble only on defense. But, we must not forget that there are lawmakers making decisions without us and some without our best interest in mind. As a citizen, it may be imperative to keep informed, ask questions and consider the ramifications of the actions of our government. Get Involved- freedom is not free- nothing is.
