Nestled in the Pavilion Square on the corner of Tyler and 21st in Northwest Wichita, sits a cozy little shop called Daylight Donuts. Its promises in delectable pastries and hot coffee are all a customer might want on a cold morning.
December 14th, Daylight Donuts (aka Sugar Shak Daylight Donuts, according to their Facebook page), was ready and waiting to serve patrons with their warm goodies, and as a pleasant surprise to those who came with children in tow, Santa Claus. My husband was there with our daughter, and after I heard the news, I was quick to show up groggy and on scene with our youngest son and my camera. According to one bubbly employee, Santa would only be there for the day, but this was all that was needed to make one happy memory.
Enter family traditions. Admittedly, my own family doesn't have many, but doughnuts on an early Saturday morning is one of them. Occasionally, my husband will rise with the sun and invite our daughter along to pick up sweets for the family. It's quality time for them, and something I know she will remember for the rest of her life. It is simple, but traditions do not have to be big or elaborate. A tradition can be reading Christmas books before bed during the holiday season, dinner after church at a local diner, giving neighbors home baked goods on Christmas Eve, or a visit to the doughnut shop on a quiet work-free morning. Traditions can be cultural or family specific. When we reflect on our childhood, we remember these things most. It is those little events that we look back to later in life when we think of our family.
Thank you, Daylight Donuts, for making our little tradition especially memorable this year.
If you would like to pay them a visit, their shop is located at 2121 N. Tyler Rd., Suite 113, Wichita, Kansas 67212. Directions here.
