On a Trip from Phuket to Phi Phi Islands in Thailand
The Phi Phi Islands are in Thailand, between the big island of Phuket and the Strait of Malacca coast of the mainland. The islands became known around the world when Ko Phi PhiLeh was the place where the Hollywood film, The Beach, was filmed. The Beach starred Leonardo DiCaprio. The film’s release caused a big increase in tourism to the islands. The Indian Ocean Tsunami of December 2004 destroyed almost all of the infrastructure on the island. Most of it had been restored by 2010, but not all of it.
The islands have clear water and beaches that are so beautiful that they have been protected through designation as a National Park. Tourism to the islands has just exploded recently. In the 1990s, very few travelers went to the islands, and they had to stay in very poor accommodations. Now, however, the spot has turned into a major tourist hotspot. However, the island has much less construction on it than KoSamui or Phuket. Ko Phi Phi is a very popular hotspot for snorkeling, diving, and other recreational activities of a marine nature. There are no places to stay or kinds of accommodations on the small island of Ko Phi Phi Lee. The sole potential to sleep on the island is to go on a tour that is guided to Maya Bay and then sleep there in a tent.
