On a Spring Break Budget? Five places to go to maximize the US $1 (Photos)

(Yes, I know the title is redundant since the symbol, "$," was once actually the letters "U" and "S" together. Eh)

Well, it's the kicker of Spring Break for some people. In case you and your buds were trying to figure out where to take your last SD bite with the few dollars you have left, think Mission Valley restaurants.

Mission Valley Cafe

San Diego Home Cooking's Mission Valley Cafe has All-You-Can-Eat Fish and Chips as their Friday Manager Special. And it's not even Lent anymore. It comes with your choice of soup or salad. If you split the meal, it isn't unlimited.

If this is the start of your early evening trek back to reality, start drinking early in the bar section of the restaurant.

They also have early dinner specials between 2:30 pm and 5:30 pm. (excluding soup or salad).

Target

Yes, let's be honest. Most people are thinking about swearing off Target because of their word selection, 'Manatee', for their plus-sized guests. But, if you could care less, remember they have a cafeteria area that might not be as busy today as usual.

And, if you use your Target Red Card, which is attached to your debit account, you'll save a little more money. The selection isn't vast. It's cheap:

  • Popcorn;
  • Hot Dogs;
  • Pizza Hut pizza;
  • Salted pretzels and a few more.

Osaka

If you haven't ventured out yet for cheap sushi, it's time to hit up Osaka, especially since it's right next to I-8--or as we say, "the Eight."

Their bento box or combinations include almost everything but a drink. But, if you're not feeling like rice, an orange salad, your choice of side and an entree, there's always the Osaka roll. Actually, there are a lot of rolls from which to choose, along with other similar cuisine items.

Costco

Well, this one is not a secret. The line for Costco Mission Valley isn't always the shortest. It's not always worth the wait either. But for $1.50, you get a All Beef Hot Dog or a Polish Dog and a drink.

This one is especially helpful if you don't have transportation. It's in the Fenton Parkway Shopping Center. So, from the Green Line, you would just get off at the Fenton stop and walk past the library.

Mission Valley malls (Fashion Valley or Mission Valley Center)

If you're staying a hotel in Hotel Circle, some of your best finds will be in one of Mission Valley's malls. The two most popular are Simon's Mall's Fashion Valley and Westfield Mission Valley. Both have food courts; and most have additional full service restaurants as well.

Fashion Valley is also attainable directly via San Diego's "Red Trolley, a.k.a. the San Diego Trolley. It stops right in the mall's parking lot.
