Omega-3 fatty acids from fish may help lower type 2 diabetes risk

There has been a catastrophic rise in the incidence of type 2 diabetes over the years. A great deal of this problem has been associated with being overweight and obese due to poor diets and lack of enough exercise. According to a University of Eastern Finland study, high concentrations of serum long-chain omega-3 fatty acids may help lower the risk of type 2 diabetes. It has been found by earlier research that weight management, exercise and high serum linoleic acid concentrations, among other things, are associated with a lowered risk of diabetes. However, findings dealing with how fish consumption or long-chain omega-3 fatty acids affect the risk which is associated with diabetes have been highly contradictory.

A study by University of Eastern Finland researchers has offered new insights into the association which exists between fish consumption and the risk of type 2 diabetes. In a well balanced diet there should be at least two fish meals per week, preferably consisting of fatty fish. Salmon, rainbow trout, herring, anchovy, sardine and mackerel are rich in long-chain omega-3 fatty acids. The cornerstones of diabetes prevention center around weight management, increased exercise and a well-rounded diet.

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids which are essential nutrients for good health, reports the Harvard School of Public Health. Omega-3 fatty acids are important for many normal body functions, such as controlling blood clotting and building cell membranes in the brain. Omega-3 fatty acids have also been found to be associated with many health benefits, including protection against heart disease and possibly stroke.

New studies have found potential benefits of omega-3 fatty acids for many others conditions including cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, and other autoimmune diseases such as lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. This new study in Finland adds type 2 diabetes to the list of diseases omega-3 fatty acids may benefit.
