A new novel said to be reminiscent of fiction by Willa Cather is the choice for Omaha Reads 2014 and will be presented by the author, Karen Gettert Shoemaker (www.karenshoemaker.com), tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. at the German-American Society in Omaha.
It will be the first of several local events for Omaha Reads 2014. Check the Omaha Public Library web site for future events, which include book discussions, "Finding Your Germanic Ancestral Village Sept. 14, and "Nebraska's German-Americans during World War I" Sept. 29.
Shoemaker's novel "The Meaning of Names," a paperback, was published in February and can be previewed at Amazon. It is set in Stuart, NE during World War I. This year the nation recognizes the centennial of World War I, according to the Omaha Public Library.
Shoemaker is a mentor with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Master of Fine Arts in writing program and the author of a book of short stories. She is scheduled to answer questions after discussing her book, which will be available for purchase.
