The UN World Food Programme (WFP) today announced two donations from Russia to fight hunger. Russia, which is hosting the Olympics this week, is supporting WFP operations in Sudan and Kyrgyzstan.

In Sudan, Russia's US $ 2 million contribution will feed 70,000 people. WFP relies on voluntary donations from governments and the public for these relief missions. In Sudan, WFP is planning to feed 4 million people this year.

Food for displaced persons and rations for school children are among the key projects in the country. Funding this operation is a massive challenge.

Adnan Khan, the WFP country director in Sudan, says, “We are very grateful for the Russian Federation’s support which will help WFP provide timely and much-needed food assistance to displaced and conflict affected people as well as other vulnerable groups across the country."

Russian Chargé d’Affaires Yury Vidakas adds, “The donation is coming within the framework of continuing cooperation between the Russian Federation and UN World Food Programme to provide the Sudanese citizens in need with vital necessities. We think that it is our duty to render assistance at any possible form to the friendly people of the Republic of the Sudan. We are very proud of being the first WFP donors to respond to WFP Sudan’s request for funding for its 2014 emergency operation."

In Kyrgyzstan, Russia's most recent donation of US $ 3 million will finance community projects to build infrastructure and agricultural capability.

WFP Kyrgyzstan Country Director Ram Saravanamuttu says, “This new contribution is part of Russia’s long-standing support for the most vulnerable people in the Kyrgyz Republic. The funding will help WFP strengthen social safety nets and build the longer-term resilience of vulnerable rural communities by improving families’ food security and nutrition, increasing production and raising their incomes.”
