Olympics 2012: Another Olympic athlete goes home after racist tweet

On Monday it was announced footballer Michel Morganella from Switzerland has been expelled for allegedly writing a racist tweet on Twitter after a game. The second athlete that has been sent packing by their team after a simple message online shows how intolerant the world has become about inappropriate views.

The latest expelled athlete footballer Michel Morganella’s tweet was against the North Koreans and his reference of a slang term said towards people who have down’s syndrome. After posting, there was an instant response that caused the tweet to be removed.

Almost immediately afterward the public response, the Switzerland team announced the decision to send the athlete home. Leaving little for the football athlete to do but pick up his items and leave the Olympics, no tear can be shed for the lack of responsibility by an athlete.

This is the second athlete who has left the Olympic Village over racist remarks. Greece expelled triple jumper Voula Papachristou after her remarks last week online. Both athletes should be a reminder to athletes in the London Olympics that it matters what is said everywhere and it’s especially true online.
