“I want to try to be the best role model I can for kids who might look into boxing as a sport and as a professional career” says World Boxing Organization champion featherweight and Olympian Orlando Cruz as he revealed to the public he is gay.
Cruz, who is on the verge of winning a world title fight at the World Boxing Organization, competed in the 2000 Olympic Games. Orlando who won 18 of his 22 contests states "I have and will always be a proud Puerto Rican. I have always been and always will be a proud gay man."
Orlando becomes the first boxer still activity boxing to publicly reveal he is gay, this big reveal comes two weeks before Cruz takes on Jorge Pazos for the WBO Latino featherweight crown. The title fight is taking place in Florida, and would be the first on the road for Orlando to earn a world title.
A former two-weight world champion boxer Emile Griffith came out as bisexual in a recent interview with Sports Illustrated magazine. Emile came out after he had retired from boxing.
Other professional athletes who have come out of the closet include Soccer player Justin Fashanu, Ruby play Gareth Thomas and Basketball star John Amaechi who was the first NBA player to announce he was gay in 2007.
