Olympic protestors arrested in Vancouver

Olympic protestors arrested in Vancouver. About 300 anti-Olympic demonstrators waved flags in protest as they walked through the streets of downtown Vancouver as the 2010 Olympic Games started Saturday. Protests also occurred on Friday during the Opening Ceremony at the 2010 Olympic Games, but they ended peacefully.

Saturday, some vandalism occurred when the protestors overturned mail boxes, spray painted vehicles and smashed windows at a department store.

Police in riot gear arrived in an attempt to calm the protestors, and split them into groups and get them out of a crowd of pedestrians. Seven protestors were arrested. Charges of illegal weapons and assault were filed.

Many protestors who are from anti-poverty and anti-globalization groups believe that the Olympic Games waste money that could be better spent on social needs. They also claim that the massive security surrounding the Olympic Games is designed to protect corporate sponsors and not the general public.

Opening Ceremonies for the 2010 Olympic Games begin Friday in Vancouver. 17,000 people are expected a day in Vancouver and the games will last seventeen days. Whistler’s construction was completed for Olympic Games two years ago and the athletes have had those two years to get ready for the games.

The 2002 Olympic Games were held in Salt Lake City, Utah. People came from around the world to see the games and it was the single largest event that Salt Lake City has ever hosted.
