New York, NY - Ana Ivanovic, an Olympic hopeful who hopes to be a part of the summer 2012 games, was beaten by Serena Williams Monday at the 2011 U.S. Open.
The 16th-seeded Serbian was overtaken by Williams with a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at Flushing Meadows where Williams – seeded 28th – will next play Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia – seeded 17th.
In Aug. 2008, Ivanovic pulled out of the Beijing Olympic tennis tournament due to a thumb injury sustained during training after losing at Wimbledon and was quoted as saying the occurrence was “probably the lowest moment of my career.”
Nonetheless, Ivanovic has announced she plans to compete in all three tennis events for which she is eligible at next summer's games in London.
According to her Website, Ivanovic, 23, “plans to team up with Bojana Jovanovski for the women's doubles competition, and with former men's doubles former No.1 Nenad Zimonjic for the mixed event.”
