Olympic athlete Oscar Pistorius arrested for the murder of his model girlfriend

Oscar Pistorius, the double amputee Olympic athlete, has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend, who was shot inside his home. According to “Fox and Friends” live on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013, Pistorius may have thought that there was an intruder in the house, but it was his girlfriend, model Reeva Steenkamp bringing him a surprise for Valentine’s Day.

The 26-year-old South African, who made history in London last year after becoming the first double amputee runner to win the Olympics, will appear in court today, according to Xfinity Sports this morning. Pistorius is undergoing blood alcohol and forensic tests at this time.

Pistorius will be arraigned and at that time he will ask for bail, but the South African Police Service will oppose the bail application, according to police spokesperson, Brigadier Denise Beukes. There are “no other suspects” in this murder, Beukes also conveyed to the media. She also reported that there had been “previous incidents” at the Olympic athlete’s home.

According to the L.A. Times today, Pistorius became a national hero known as the "Blade Runner" after the athlete won the gold medal with his “high-tech artificial legs.” His model girlfriend, who spoke out on Twitter about the abuse and rape of women, was shot four times in the early morning hours in Pistorius’ South African capitol home.

The explanation that Steenkamp had been mistaken for an intruder has come from the media and not the police, officials report. Law enforcement have spoken with neighbors who have heard and seen things leading up to this incident. The information that the neighbors did offer has not been released to the media today.

There’s been previous “allegations of a domestic nature” concerning the double amputee Olympic runner and his girlfriend. Police received a call around 3 a.m. on Thursday morning that there had been a shooting. Police arrived as paramedics were trying to revive Steenkamp. A 9 mm pistol was recovered from Pistorius’ home and a murder case was immediately opened. Police did not release Steenkamp’s name as the murder victim, but her publicist released a statement about her death.
