Oscar Pistorius, an Olympic and Paralympic track star has been charged with the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp according to USA Today on Feb. 14. The shooting took place this morning in the athlete’s Pretoria, South Africa home.
Details of the shooting are still sketchy and being investigated. South African police have said they will oppose bail when Pistorius appears in court on Friday. Police spokesperson Brigadier Denise Beukes confirmed that Pistorius was at his home following the death of the victim and further stated that "there is no other suspect involved."
Steenkamp, 30, has been confirmed dead by her publicist. She worked as a model and recently participated as a contestant on “Tropika Island of Treasure 5,” a South African reality TV show. She is believed to have died at the scene with a shot to the arm and head and where a 9mm pistol was recovered. Police confirm there have been past incidents of a domestic nature at the home.
Pistorius earned fame when he became the first double amputee to participate in the Olympics. Using carbon fiber prosthetic blades, he earned gold medals for the 4 x 100 meter relay and 400 meter individual races during the 2012 Paralympic Games.
South Africa treats Pistorius as an ambassador of their athletic achievements. Time named him one of the world’s most influential people in 2012. Endorsement deals with Nike, Oakley and fashion designer Thierry Mugler have helped make the 26 year old financially secure.
