Herbert, one of seven wrestlers to be voted onto the commission, is the only U.S. athlete. Others named to the FILA Athlete Commission include Maria Prevolaraki of Greece; Canada's Carol Huynh; ; Japan's Kaori Icho; France's Christophe Guenot; Iran's Hamid Soryan Reihanpour and Tomas Lorincz of Hungary.
Commission members were selected in balloting by the athletes representing their countries at the 2013 World Wrestling Championships which concluded Sunday in Budapest. Each wrestler who made weight at the world championships could nominate up to seven wrestlers for the committee.
One of the new Athletes Commission members will be elected by fellow members to serve on FILA’s governing body, the Bureau, and to serve as chairman of the committee.
“This is our new direction that we promised the IOC when we made our case to stay in the Olympic Games,” said FILA President Nenad Lalovic. “We want our current athletes involved in what we do, how we do things and to be a big part of the future that we have as an excellent organization.”
According to FILA, its Athletes Commission is one of 17 that are being named by the wrestling organization. The others will be announced in the coming weeks as they are finalized.
A Pennsylvania native, Herbert’s impressive mat career spans folkstyle and freestyle. As a wrestler at Northwestern, Herbert was a two-time NCAA champ (winning titles in 2007 and 2009), three-time Big Ten titlewinner, and four-time NCAA All-American. He concluded his college career with a 149-4 overall record, and by winning the Dan Hodge Trophy, awarded each year to the best collegiate wrestler.
Among Herbert’s freestyle accomplishments: 2009 World silver medalist, and member of the U.S. men’s freestyle team that competed at the 2012 London Olympics. In addition, he’s been an active member of the Committee for the Preservation of Olympic Wrestling (CPOW), a go-to guy for media-savvy quotes about the sport. And if that weren't enough, Herbert plays early 1980s Oklahoma State wrestler Mike Sheets in the upcoming Hollywood movie "Foxcatcher" about Olympic gold medal-winning brothers Mark and Dave Schultz.
