Olympian "Blade Runner," Oscar Pistorius, formally charged with murder

The inspiring South African sprinter, Oscar Pistorius, who just this past August was the first double-amputee to compete alongside able-bodied athletes at the 2012 London Olympics, was formally charged with murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, in South Africa.

In a South African courtroom this morning, Pistorius wept as he was charged with Steenkamp's "premeditated murder." Representatives for Pistorius claim that Pistorius believed he was shooting at an intruder, however, authorities dispute that defense. In fact, there were reports from other residents in the upscale gated community that they heard what sounded like a couple arguing before shots were fired.

After the court hearing in which Pistorius was charged, his representatives released a statement saying "the alleged murder is disputed in the strongest terms." The statement also said Pistorius wanted to "send his deepest sympathies to the family of Reeva."
