Oly defeats Texas, remains unbeaten in 2011

Perhaps the whole "rapture" thing turned out to be a fraud. However in a showdown of state capitols, the Oly Rollers unleashed their own 14 horsewomen of the apocalypse within the confines of Skateland in Olympia as the hometown Cosa Nostra Donnas once again handily defeated the team placed before them on their wooden floor. This time their opponents were the mighty Texecutioners of Austin's Texas Rollergirls.

The tone was set early in this one. During the opening jam, Oly's ace jammer Atomatrix did her usual thing and started the scoring with a 14-4 decision over Olivia Shootin John. Olivia did have a nice jam in the third as she was able to claim a 5-0 grand slam decision for Texas. But in the very next jam Hard Times took the jammers cap for Oly and posted another double-digit scoring run on the board in a 10-0 dusting that made the score 28-9 in favor of Oly.

But those were the only two double-digit scoring jams for the high flying Cosa Nostra Donnas in the first half. Throughout the initial 30 minutes, the Texas pack did an excellent job of making the Oly jammers earn their way through the pack. Even though the likes of Atomatrix, Scara ta Death and Tannibal Lector often found themselves with lead status, it was earned after a tough battle through the pack during the initial pass.

Although the Oly defense was certainly impressive, too. Bloody Mary earned Texas' biggest jam in the 15th run of the first half when she posted a 10-0 tally up on the board. But along with Olivia Shootin John's previously mentioned grand slam run in the 3rd jam, Oly never allowed Texas to score more than 4 points in any given jam in the first half. In fact, Oly was able to hold Texas scoreless in 11 of the 21 jams run during the first thirty minutes. This led to a halftime score of 84-34 in favor of the Cosa Nostra Donnas.

Texas came out of the box in the second half looking much better. In the first two jams of the final thirty minutes, Olivia Shootin John and Bloody Mary combined for a 6-0 mini run. But just as quickly as Texas showed some life, Oly once again snuffed out any hope with cruel authority. Hard Times started it in the 3rd jam with a 15-0 pasting of the Texas defense. Then all-world jammer Atomatrix equaled that with her own 15-0 slug to the gut in the 4th jam that extended Oly's lead out to 68 points.

Olivia Shootin John showed why she is certainly one of the derby nations best jammers in the 6th and 8th jams of the second half. In the 6th jam she lit up the scoreboard with a 14-1 trouncing. Then two jams later she upped her own ante with a 19-0 pounding that pulled the Texecutioners back to within 45 points.

Unfortunately, Texas would only score a total of 14 more points over the final ten jams of the game. With the Oly defense now almost completely clamping down on the Texas jammers, Oly dropped the hammer and drove this game home with the certainty of a championship level team. Over these final ten jams of the game, Oly picked up four of their eight overall double-digit scoring runs of the game. Atomatrix chipped-in with two of them (13-0 in the tenth and 15-0 in the fifteenth) while Tannibal Lector (10-0 in the 12th) and Hockey Honey (10-0 in the 17th) helped complete yet another virtuoso performance by the #2 team in the WFTDA western regional standings. When it was all said and done, Oly had claimed a 184-93 victory.

Three Stars

3. Olivia Shootin John. She only jammed twice in the first half, scoring the first 9 points for Texas on the night. But she turned on the jets in the second half and finished with a team leading 50 points in 8 jams run. She also chipped-in nicely within the pack by collecting 5 blocked jammers and dished out a big hit that sent a Cosa crumbling to the floor.

2. Tannibal Lector. I tell anyone who wants to listen (and belive me...those people can be hard to find sometimes) that when it comes to the total package, Lector is the best player in the sport today. And she added to my argument on Saturday night as she not only led the game in blocked jammers (12) and hole opening blocks for her jammer to get around (4), but she averaged almost 6 points a jam in the four jams she donned the star cap by collecting 23 points in 4 jams, 3 of which she earned lead status.

1. Atomatrix. Ya know...perhaps the only thing more difficult that beating the Oly Rollers in a bout is being able to snag the number one star away from Atomatrix when she plays. The funny thing is that even though Texas gave her a lot to fight through all night, she was still able to post a staggering 93 points on the board for the Cosa Nostra Donnas in 17 jams. They say with some elite athletes that you can't totally stop them but you can try to contain them. Texas did a reasonable job of containing Oly's ace jammer and she still slapped them around for 93 points. Incredible.

Key Jam of the Game

Gotta go with the 4th jam of the first half. Texas was showing some life after a strong first jam for Oly. But Hard Times got the Cosa's going in the right direction with a 10-0 romp that swung the momentum fully in Oly's favor.

Bad Girl of the Game

Oly's Licker N Split sat in the box for a total of 6 minutes during the game from what I have here.

And one other score to pass along to you. Everett's Jet City Rollergirls all-star team, the Bombers, traveled to Nashville this weekend. Unfortunately for northwest derby fans Jet City came up short against Nashville as they fell to the score of 156-67.
