Lionel Bart’s Oliver! is on stage at the Coastal Repertory Theatre August 1 through August 31.
Based on the satirical novel by 19th century social critic Charles Dickens, Oliver tells the tale of Fagin, the doomed Nancy, the Artful Dodger and the little orphan himself Oliver.
Oliver Twist. this August, brining Oliver, the Artful Dodger, Fagin, Nancy and all your favorite characters to life.
The cast of over 30 actors features some of the Coastside’s young talent who explore the balance of loneliness and hope, and the search for love through songs such as Where is Love, Who Will Buy?, and ‘Food, Glorious Food’.
Set in Victorian England, Oliver Twist is the name given by a workhouse warden to a boy born in an orphanage. Now an adolescent, Oliver, who has never felt loved or accepted, manages to escape from the harsh workhouse.
Making his way to London, Oliver joins a group of other young boys, headed by the Artful Dodger, who "make wallets" under the direction of Fagin. Unaware to Oliver, the group is a band of thieves and pickpockets. One of Fagin's associates is the violent Bill Sikes, whose girlfriend, Nancy, is devoted to him despite his abuse of her. Oliver looks to Nancy as his one true friend, especially needed when he discovers what Fagin and the boys do. Oliver also comes to the attention of the wealthy Mr. Brownlow who has learned of Oliver’s true heritage. But Bill kidnaps Oliver and tries to hold him for ransom. Nancy must now decide to stay loyal to Bill, or do what is best for Oliver by helping him escape.
“The story and music of Oliver! are as impactful and meaningful today as it was when it had its start in 1963,” says Joe Duffy, director. “Oliver! shows us the importance of embracing life, no matter how small the pleasures.”
Coastal Rep Artistic Director Michael Lederman agrees. “These days, more than ever, audiences need to be inspired and reminded of the value of life, of doing the right thing by others and the power of love. Oliver! delivers these messages like no other modern musical.”
